Is it expensive to redesign my jewellery?

bespoke redesigns

When you get in touch to redesign your jewellery, you’re already itching to know the price.

First we discuss your pieces, their significance to you and what design you’d like, and once you’ve chosen your preferred design, the serious talk begins and I send you the quote. Amongst other things (such as budget), your reaction to the quote will depend on how you view the process of having something entirely bespoke made for you.

Let’s look in more detail at what a bespoke jewellery redesign service involves, which contributes to the price of the redesign. I’ll then give you an insight into the various price brackets of a Liri Redesign.

Redesigning jewellery is a different ‘shopping’ experience

I sincerely believe that redesigning your jewellery is a completely different experience and has a different purpose from buying jewellery off the shelf on the internet or high street. Before you even approach me, you’re looking for something different – a different piece of jewellery and a different ‘shopping’ experience’. So what’s so different about it?

Personalised customer care

The customer care you receive when commissioning your redesign is unlike walking into a shop or buying online. You have my full attention for 8 weeks or even more – from the beginning of your enquiry to the delivery of the finished piece.

We will get to know each other well, you will share some of your family stories and we will discuss in detail what style you want so I can ensure I deliver a piece that you’ll completely love. We’ll exchange numerous messages, emails and even video calls, as we work together to get the piece just right.

Bespoke design

Redesigning your jewellery is the perfect opportunity to create a truly unique piece just for you. Yes, you may choose a popular design style such as a cluster or bubble ring, but because we will be using your metal and gems, the final piece will be unique to you.

It’s also an opportunity to bring a design idea you’ve had, to life, or I can design a piece based on your preferences, personality and style. Whatever route you take, the result is always a one of a kind piece.

Do we need extra gold or gems?

Sometimes we need a little extra help to bring an idea to life. Maybe we need extra gold or some new gems to make a design really pop.

The most significant extra cost would be if we needed extra gold, in particular 18ct gold. With gold prices having surged 28% this past year alone, clients are often surprised at how much even a few grams can add to the final price.

We can always add 9ct to your 18, to lower the price, but this will affect the final hallmark as the quality of the gold has been lowered. I always explain this so you can make the decision that’s best for you.

Your piece will be made in the UK

Unlike the large jewellery companies we are familiar with, your Liri redesign will be made in the UK.

This significantly affects the price. Larger companies mass produce their pieces in the thousands often in the far east where wages and business costs are much lower.

Having something made in the UK means the maker will receive a higher salary and the business will have higher running costs. These factors are reflected in the price.

Bespoke design = bespoke service

Because nobody comes to us with the same pieces to redesign, we begin every redesign enquiry afresh. This means dealing with every client as an individual, drawing bespoke sketches, handmaking pieces from scratch, creating bespoke CAD designs.

Unlike the mass production of jewellery, every piece is created from a process tailored to each customer. There is no automated mass production line, rather it is real people moving the process along specifically for each customer. This means that much more time is spent with the client, which, of course, affects the price.

So, is redesigning your jewellery expensive?

It’s true that many people think redesigning their jewellery is a cheaper option than buying new. After all, you’re supplying the materials, so it must cost less.

On the whole, yes, it does cost less than buying new but if it doesn’t, it’s due to the reasons above. So let’s look at some price examples.

If you want to redesign your jewellery into a plain wedding band, the price is typically £395. If you want an engraving or stones added or some extra complexity to the design, the price will increase.

If you want to redesign your pieces into a single new piece and we don’t need any extra metal or gems, the price can vary from £795 – £1695. Again, it depends on the complexity of the new design and the production method we use.

If we need additional gems and metals, the price varies according to each piece.

The upshot is that jewellery redesign is a significant investment. It’s an opportunity to recycle sentimental pieces or jewellery that’s no longer your style and work closely with a designer to bring your special and unique piece alive.
